NEWS: Due to extensive flooding, the Gateway Melges 24 Spring Regatta
has been CANCELLED for this year.
Melges 24 Fleet Zero is hosted by the Carlyle Sailing Association, located on beautiful Carlyle Lake, in central Illinois.
Carlyle Lake is the second largest lake in Illinois, behind Lake Michigan. Our sailing area is two miles wide and ten miles long. Carlyle sailing conditions are a mix of light air in the summer, with spring and fall frontal systems giving us challenging and breezy sailing as well. Our fleet is also active in the racing programs sponsored by the Carlyle Yacht Club. CSA and CYC host a variety of buoy racing programs for both dinghies and keelboats. CSA is a fantastic facility and offers easy logistics, parking for 250 boats/trailers, three dry sail hoists, an easy going attitude, and lots of camaraderie.
Fleet Zero is the Melges 24 Midwest District's newest fleet, with six Melges 24s forming a very active and competitive group. The Melges 24 has an interrupted history on Carlyle Lake when one boat was active in the mid 90's, but the boat was sold to a buyer off the lake. In 2006 one boat revived the Melges 24 presence, and 4 more boats were added to the fleet in 2007 and one in 2008. We believe the fleet will keep growing as the boat is well suited to Carlyle Lake sailing conditions.
The Fleet Zero local schedule begins in April and goes to the end of October. Many boats travel to class regattas and are active in the Melges 24 Midwest District. Come join us for the inaugural Gateway Melges 24 Spring Regatta May 3-4, 2008!
Harry Melges Says: “Carlyle is a great place to sail. I have sailed there numerous times and we have always been impressed with the great body of water that is Carlyle and what great sailing conditions you have. The lack of motor boat chop really makes for a great regatta venue. May should be a great time of year to sail at Carlyle with the promise of great wind and weather.”
